Sand filtration is one of the most established tertiary treatment technologies. Water passes through a bed of graded sand that captures suspended solids and, with upstream dosing, particulate phosphorus. Deep-bed and continuous (upflow, self-washing) sand filters are the two main variants. Sand filters are valued for their robustness — they tolerate load swings and allow inline chemical dosing — making them a dependable choice where influent quality is variable or targets are demanding.
