Activated carbon works by adsorption: dissolved organic micropollutants stick to the vast internal surface of the carbon rather than being screened out. It is used as a dedicated advanced stage where operators need to reduce trace organic substances that pass straight through conventional filtration. Carbon can be dosed as a fine powder (PAC) upstream of a filter, or installed as fixed granular beds (GAC). It is typically combined with a downstream solids-capture step, which makes it a natural partner for cloth or sand filtration.
Adsorption sits at the advanced end of the treatment train, after the biological and filtration stages have done their work. It exists to tackle a specific problem: the dissolved trace organics that physical filtration simply cannot hold back. Because it is added on top of an existing plant rather than replacing anything, it is usually planned alongside a solids-capture stage that keeps carbon fines out of the final effluent.
