Directive (EU) 2024/3019 is the revised EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, published in December 2024 to replace the original 1991 directive (91/271/EEC). It expands mandatory tertiary treatment for nutrient removal to all plants above 10,000 PE, introduces quaternary treatment for micropollutants at larger plants, and sets phased compliance deadlines from 2033 to 2045. Member states must transpose it into national law by 2027, and national rules may be stricter than the EU baseline.
